I am reading Sliding into Home a memoir by Kendra Baskett or as you might know her, Kendra from The Girls Next Door. This story is about her life and the struggles she has faced to become the person she is today. Her father was never around and she got into bad things at a young age. She struggles to stay out of drugs, stay in school, and stay out of trouble. Unfortunately none of these things lasted very long. I really enjoy this book so far, it looks like a good inspiration for young girls especially. This will teach them that no matter where you come from or what you have been through, you can have a good life still. I chose this book because I watch her show Kendra on E!

At this point in the book Kendra is describing how out of control she was beginning to become. She was staying out on school nights sneaking into her house as her mom was getting ready for work. She would crawl in bed to look as if she had been sleeping all night long, then getting ready and going to school without sleep. She is describing about how at this point in her life she would not listen to anyone unless they were telling her to smoke cocaine or drink alcohol. As a character Kendra is mis-guided, lonely, confused, but she is not dumb. She is very intelligent but the loneliness she feels from her father abandoning her family. She is alone and comforts herself with partying, drugs, and alcohol. The best part of the book so far for me is when she realizes what she is doing with her life and that it needs to stop. This happened when she tried to sneak in toher house early in the morning, her normal routine, but this time something was different. Her mom had locked her out of the house. For me, there is no bad part so far. I think every story she tells in this story is vital to understand her life and the struggles she has over come to be where she is now.

As I have finished the book, I am very glad I had picked this to read. Coming closer to the end of the book Kendra described the struggles she went through growing up with out her father and her struggle with drugs. Her story lifts up when she moves into the Playboy Mansion. Most people these days would look down on young women living in a mansion like this one. But for Kendra and her family especially, it was a blessing. The girlfriends did chores to earn money, had the privileges to afford college and trips around the world that half of the young women would never be able to see. They had curfews that kept the girlfriends out of trouble and Kendra most importantly. She then met Hank Baskett, the nicest man that she had ever dated. The main message in her memoir is that wherever you come from, you can do great things. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone take take ahold of their own lives and turn them around. I enjoyed reading this book cover to cover. I feel that Kendra is a great role model for young women because she says how she was uncomfortable with her body, and wanted to fit in, just the majority of teenage girls in the world. She shows from experience that everyone makes bad decisions but only you, yourself, can fix it. You cannot expect to change when only others want you to change. If you do not want to change and make an effort, you will always stay the same. This book is one I would definitely recommend.

I have recently started reading the book, Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea. This is written by Chelsea Handler. She has her own television show on E! Network. While watching her show I learned about this story of hers, also where I heard about the last novel I read. I am on page 18 after reading the first chapter. In the opening chapter of Chelsea's book she describes her life as a kid. She was picked on and teased throughout her elementary school days. Something I wonder is if her hard times as a kid, positively or negatively made an impact on the rest of her life. I hope she covers that later in her novel. On Chelsea's show, she puts off a very thick exterior and seems like a strong women that does not let things hurt her. I wonder if deep down, she is sensitive. I am excited to read further in her book, to learn more about Chelsea Handler.
